Kite-flying has come a long way in Kelantan. The Malay Annals mentioned it as being in existence as early as 1500, during the early days of the Malacca Sultanate.
“Wau” or kites come in all shapes and colours, their bamboo frames decorated with coloured shimmering paper.
They are painstakingly designed and crafted in vibrant colours and patterns. Intricate floral cutouts are pasted on, building up the design until the kite is ready for the bright paper tassels that complete its decoration.
Kite construction is an ancient art passed down from the nobles of the Melakan court. Sometimes a bow=shaped device is attached to the kite, giving it a high-pitched humming sound when flown.
