The Australian Boys Choir with the Hwa Chong String Orchestra

THE AUSTRALIAN BOYS CHOIR

Actual photos of the show held on 29th and 30th June 2010

Unique because of its wide-ranging repertoire and the thoroughness of its training program, the Australian Boys Choir was formed in 1939 to provide musical education to talented boys. The performing group of the Choir has a regular touring program including, in recent years, Indonesia and the USA.

The Choir has worked under many international conductors, including Zubin Mehta, Jorge Mester, Hiroyuki Iwaki, John Hopkins and Sir Bernard Heinze, and with great orchestras (including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and many of Australia’s leading choirs.

Involvement in major symphonic works has included performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Britten’s War Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. The choir has also contributed to the soundtracks of several movies – most notably in the Oscar-nominated musical score of ‘Elizabeth‘, and the Australian box office hit ‘The Dish‘.

‘ The performance was impressively polished, both dramatically and musically ’ - The New York Times, 2000

‘ The repertoire is superb and the choral technique is most outstanding ’ – Dr. Weston Noble (respected and beloved American choral conductor)

The Choir performed at the great Jubilee Year celebrations in Rome in January 2000 and events leading up to the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998. The Choir was invited to attend Americafest, an international singing festival for male choirs, on three occasions (in 1998, 2000 & 2002), and was one of Australia’s representatives in the World Choral Symposium, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2002.

Members of the performing group of the Australian Boys Choir are selected from within the Choir’s training groups. Movement of boys through the Choir’s training scheme is dictated by their musicianship skill level rather than age.
